St. Joseph's Church is sponsoring a cross country team to participate in the regional Parochial Athletic Conference. The team is open to pre-school through 8th grade children with meets being held at locations in LaPorte, Michigan City, and Chesterton on Saturdays in September and October.  Team t-shirts cost $20.  Practices are held on Mondays and Wednesdays and will include performance training, cross country competition technique, as well as instruction on incorporating prayer and the virtues in life and competition. To participate, contact Joe and Nicki Knowlton 219-393-8928.  All who are interested MUST fill out the registration form and have a physical exam.  Click here to download the:

Practice Info: Mondays and Wednesdays 4-5:30PM @ Kesling Park, back entrance, near Fort LaPlayPorte.  Children should wear running clothes and running shoes and bring a water bottle.  Since cross country races are through forest and field, that is how we will be practicing.  The children should be prepared to run.  The physical must be completed and turned into the coaches by the first meet (tentatively set for mid-September), so you don't need it for the first practice.  Team shirts are $20 each.  Parents are welcome to order a shirt as well.

Meet Information:  There are 5-6 meets which are held on Saturday mornings in September and early October.  In previous years, the locations have included Queen of All Saints, Notre Dame, St. Patrick's, and Kesling Park.  Students compete against all the other schools in the PAC and each race is split into 5 grade divisions.  Kindergarten students run approx. 1/2 Kilometer, 1st-4th grade run 1 Kilometer, 5th and 6th grade run 2 Kilometers, and 7th and 8th grade run 3 Kilometers.  We will have more information about the meets once the athletic directors all get together for their yearly organizational meeting.  We provide information about how to dress and what to eat before a race.  On race day we will have a tent, water, and healthy snack for the kids (snacks are for AFTER the race).  Race days are always a lot of fun, with everyone cheering one another on.  Often it is the first race that really motivates the kids to work harder to improve their time.  We record the time for every child, so they can see how they improve through the season (and they always improve, so it's a great feeling to see how hard work and diligence pay off).

Please let us know if you have any questions.  We are excited to get started and are looking forward to a great season!
